Module 1 — Introduction to Networks for
e-Learning
|
Learning objectives
-
Develop a broad understanding of the role of computer networks in education, in particular, how networks
are used to offer learning on the Web.
Module Overview
Horton defines e-learning broadly as “any use of the Web and Internet technologies to create learning experiences.”
Learning may be organized formally around a carefully planned curriculum and delivered via complex systems
designed to handle thousands of students, or it can occur individually and informally. In this module, you will learn
about the scope of of how e-learning is delivered and the central role played by network technologies and tools.

Reflective Questions
|
-
Why can’t a single technology system provide for all e-Learning delivery needs?
-
Would you agree that the network technologies and tools determine to an extent the
kind of learning environment that is available, which in turn, shapes course learning strategies?
-
After reading Horton chapter 2, which type of e-Learning best describes the way this course is organized?
-
Think about ways that something as simple as email works as networked tool and how it might be used to
support instruction.
-
What makes the idea of the Web as platform or Web OS feasible at this point in time? What problems does it solve for offering e-learning?
